About the General Library of The University of Tokyo

  • The General Library of The University of Tokyo is one of the libraries consisting the University of Tokyo Library System. We bulid and hold collections in broad range of subjects for the students and the researchers in various faculties and departments.
  • When those who do not belong to the University of Tokyo need our materials, they can browse them with the required procedure.
  • Alumni can get Alumni Library Pass.
  • The description of this page is about the General Library. Please note that the other libraries in the University of Tokyo have their own rules and you have to follow them when using them.

Before getting here

  • Please confirm if your intended material is held by the General Library before getting here. We will not grant admission to those who do not intend to use any particular materials.
    There are some ways to check the holdings.
  • The University of Tokyo Library OPAC
    • Check if there is "Gen.***" in the column "Location".
    • You need the "Call No." to find the material in the library.
  • Asking the reference desk by the ways below. Old books happen not to be found in OPAC.

  • Students and faculties of Japanese national universities and colleges
    • Available during the library is open.
    • Show the university identification.
  • Students and faculties of prefectural, municipal and private universities and colleges
    • Available 9:00-17:00 on weekdays. (except national holidays and closed days)
    • Show the university identification.
    • Admission for up to continuous 2 weeks can be granted if you have a referral form from the university library you belong.
  • Others
    • Available 9:00-17:00 on weekdays. (except national holidays and closed days)
    • Show official identification with your name and address.


  • Browsing
    • Open shelves for books and periodicals are available.
    • For the materials in the stack (books and periodical back numbers),please ask the library staff at the stack counter.

      *Rare books, the books in the collection room and the oversize western books which call numbers begin with "B" are available 9:00-17:00 on weekdays.
      *You need an advance reservation to browse the rare books. Click here for detail.
  • Photocopy
    • Available in accordance with the copyright law.
      *Some materials in the stack are restricted by its conditions and deterioration. Please confirm with the staff.
  • Reference
    • Reference service is available for the information on the University of Tokyo and related materials.
