How to use the Carrel (For students)

The carrel could be used without reservation as below when it has no reservation for reading materials by researchers.

Eligible Users

U-Tokyo Member Students registered to UTokyo libraries (under graduates, graduates, auditors and research students)

Available hours

From 9:00 to 30 minutes before closing hours.*

  Weekdays Saturdays, Sundays, and National Holidays 
Standard Term 9:00 - 22:00 9:00 - 18:30
August and March 9:00 - 20:30 9:00 - 16:30

* The reception closes 1 hour before the library’s closing hours.

How to use

  • The carrel is for one person, please do not share with others.
  • Please present your Student ID to the B1F Counter.
    • No reception for carrel without valid and registered Student ID.
  • Reservation is not accepted. 
  • Could be used for up to three hours. (extension available, depends on vacancy)
  • Please use the carrel which is appointed by the staff. 
  • Receive the key from the staff. You can lock and leave the carrel during the three-hour session.
    • If you leave the carrel during the use, please take care of your valuables.
  • No speech or sound is allowed. (No soundproofing)

  • Please clean the carrel and return to the original condition at the end of use. Then lock the door and return the key to the B1F counter. 

How to extend

  • If you need to extend the use, please ask at the B1F counter 10 minutes before the appointed time.
  • If there is no waiting list on the carrel by the time, you could use the same carrel for up to another three hours.

Waiting for vacancy

  • If all the carrels are fully used, please put yourself on waiting list.
  • Please present your Student ID at the B1F counter, take a number, then wait near the B1F counter.
  • The staff calls out your number on your turn. 
  • If you leave for a short time during the wait, please inform the staff.
  • If there’s no response to the number, the next person is prioritized.
