[Event Archive] Science Library Display 2023

The Science Library holds mini-exhibitions on an irregular basis to display and introduce several items from our diverse collection. In FY2022, follwing exhibits were held. We hope you enjoy them.


■ Great Earthquake and Seismology

This year marks a century of the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923.
It is said that earthquake research in Japan began with the leadership of foreigners who stayed in Japan in the late Meiji period. Whenever a great earthquake occurred, investigations and reports were made, and researchs were conducted to analyze the mechanism and preventative measures.

This exhibition was divided the exhibition period into the 1st and the 2nd term to display many of materials held in the library.
In the 1st term, we displayed reports and papers focusing on the Yokohama Earthquake (1880) and the Nobi Earthquake (1891). The 2nd term focused on researches after the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923).

■ 100th anniversary of the planetarium

The year 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the modern planetarium.

The planetarium, which was created by the Carl Zeiss Jena in Germany, was first projected at the German Museum in October 1923 for interested parties. After inspection and reworking, a test screening was held on the roof of the factory of the Carl Zeiss Jena in 1924. In 1925, it was shown to the public at the German Museum and attracting many visitors.

This exhibition introduced magazine articles that describe the conditions at the time of the birth, as well as materials related to the history of planetariums.

■ The history of “An illustrated flora of Nippon by Tomitaro MAKINO”

The TV drama "Ranman" was broadcast for six months starting in the spring of 2023. Tomitaro MAKINO was the model for the main character in the drama and is closely associated with the School of Science, the University of Tokyo. "Illustrated Flora of Nippon", his representative work, has been revised and updated and is still used today as a major botanical illustrated guidebook.

We introduced several materials of "Illustrated Flora of Nippon" in the library's collection along with their features in the exhibition, and the first issue of "The Botanical Magazine" (published in 1887), which Makino himself was involved in founding.
