Introduction Movie of the General Library

An introductory movie (about 4 minutes) of the General Library is available. You can also get a glimpse of the interior of the building.

The University of Tokyo Campus Tour

The General Library is included in the route of the campus tour organized by the University of Tokyo (you will not enter the building). We hope you will join us on this tour, which will take you around some of the most famous places on campus.

About Library Tours

※During the viewing, books, journals and computers in the library are not available to the visitors.

  • Advance reservations are required.
  • You can visit the Memorial Room on the 1st floor and the Hall on the 3rd floor of the General Library.
  • To maintain the learning environment, the number of visitors and the visiting periods are limited.
  • The application procedure differs depending on whether you are accompanied by university affiliate or alumnus.
  • Please read the"Note for Visitors" carefully and understand before applying.

Types of Visit and How to Apply

A: Visitors accompanied by UTokyo members or alumni

  • For General Library visits, please place your reservation via the form from 14 to 2 weekdays in advance of your desired date (excluding Saturday, Sunday, national holiday, and library closing day). Without a reservation, you will not be allowed to enter the library.
    • If you've received a confirmation email and haven't heard back from us, you may proceed with your visit on the reserved date and time.
    • If you do not receive a confirmation email within one hour after submitting the form, please contact us via the Inquiry Form.
  • Visiting days: Open days (including Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays)
    • Visits are not available in July and January (due to regular examinations).

  • Visiting hours: up to 30 minutes during opening hours (last admission 30 minutes before closing)

  • Capacity: Approximately 10 people
    • If the number of visitors generally exceeds 15, including the leader, please divide into smaller groups and stagger the time of your visit.

    • Each group must be led by an UTokyo member or alumnni.

    • Since there is a limit to the number of visitors during the same time period, no visitors will be allowed if there is a conflict with other tour reservations.

* This form was suspended at 5:00 p.m. on March 27th. After April, If you are alumnus to wish accompany, please register to use the library in advance before bring your visitors with you.

B: General visitors Not Accompanied by UTokyo members or alumni *August-September and February-March only

  • Only in August-September and February-March, Unaccompanied visits by UTokyo members or alumni are permitted.
  • For General Library visits, please place your reservation via the form from 14 to 2 weekdays in advance of your desired date (excluding Saturday, Sunday, national holiday, and library closing day). Without a reservation, you will not be allowed to enter the library.
    • If you've received a confirmation email and haven't heard back from us, you may proceed with your visit on the reserved date and time.
    • If you do not receive a confirmation email within one hour after submitting the form, please contact us via the Inquiry Form.
  • Visiting days: Weekdays when the library is open

  • Visiting hours: up to 30 minutes from 9:00-17:00 (last admission at 16:30) *Not available on weekends and holidays.
  • Capacity: Approximately 10 people
    • If the number of visitors generally exceeds 15, including the leader, please divide into smaller groups and stagger the time of your visit. Each group must be led by a Japanese/English speaker.

    • Since there is a limit to the number of visitors during the same time period, no visitors will be allowed if there is a conflict with other tour reservations.

  • The reservation holder is regarded to be older than 16 years old. Children need to be accompanied with adult. And, admission of preschool children should withhold.

Business Visits

If you would like to visit us for a tour or interview, please contact us at least one month in advance at the contact information in the "Interviews and Business Visits" section of the link below. We will review your request and contact you if we can arrange a tour or interview.

Note for Visitors

  • There is no guide. Please explore the library within the open areas. Do not enter the closed area for visitors.

  • During the visit, library materials, books, journals, reading seat, computers and other resouces are not available to the visitors.

  • Taking pictures in the library is prohibited.
  • Eating and drinking are not allowed during the visit.

  • Please keep quiet in the library.
