Book Donation

If you are considering donating materials such as books to the General Library, please read and acknowledge the following points:

*We do not offer pick-up services for used books.
*If your materials do not meet our criteria, please consider contributing to our used book fundraiser.

Eligible Materials

The General Library collects academic materials that are necessary for the learning, research, and education of our university's students and faculty, based on the guidelines (only in Japanese). The following materials are not eligible for donation:

Ineligible Materials

  • Materials already in possession of the General Library (please check our holdings in advance via The University of Tokyo Library OPAC).
  • Materials that are damaged, deteriorated, defaced, or with markings or writing.
  • Materials with specific conditions attached to their donation.
  • Materials whose scholarly value has diminished due to aging or revised editions.
  • Materials primarily focused on promotion or advertising for specific individuals or organizations.
  • Materials lacking scholarly value.

In addition, we cannot accept materials falling under the following categories:

  • Reference books and exam preparation materials for various qualifications and exams
  • Practical books, manuals, guidebooks, and rulebooks related to hobbies and entertainment
  • Individual works of fiction, poetry, or essays
  • Self-published autobiographies or personal accounts, etc.

Please note that even if materials meet our criteria, we may refuse acceptance due to space constraints and other factors within the library.

Handling of Donated Books

The handling of donated materials will be at the discretion of our library:

  • We do not provide individual notifications regarding the acceptance decision and its reasons.
  • Acknowledgment receipts and thank-you letters will be omitted.
  • Accepted materials will be cataloged and preserved based on our library's shelving rules. Generally, they will not be grouped or shelved as a collection.
  • Depending on their subject, accepted materials may be placed in appropriate libraries within the university's other departments or branches.
  • Materials deemed unacceptable will generally not be returned.

If you agree to the above terms, please either send or bring the books to us. However, if you plan to donate 10 or more books, please contact us through the "Inquiry Form" to inquire about our acceptance in advance. Subsequently, please submit a list of the donated materials.
