“Excessive downloading" as below; is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

  • Using robots or other automated programs to search or download for large quantity of articles on a specific theme from subscription resources
  • Manually downloading all the PDF articles files from search results within a short time period.
  • Using the download function of reference management tools (EndNote, Mendeley, etc.) for large quantity of PDF files. (it may draw suspicion from publisher)
  • Using pre-read browser functions. (Pre-read browser functions continually access links within pages in the background while pages are being viewed.) Please check and change your browser settings. (Ref: Website of Chuo University. Center for Information Technology and Computing Services )

The number of concurrent users

The maximum number of concurrent users expected to use the SSL-VPN / Authentication Gateway Service at any given time.  

  • If the number exceed the limit, you receive a message “reached the concurrent access limit” at login. In that case, try logging in after a while.
  • Be sure to log out after using the service.

 

Using e-books and e-journals

  • E-journal & E-book Portal
    • E-journals and e-books have off-campus connections are indicated an icon of "via Off-Campus access service" or "Free".
    • E-journals and e-books marked "via Off-Campus access service" cannot be accessed directly from E-journal & E-book Portal. Access via SSL-VPN / Authentication Gateway Service.
    • You can search Japanese e-journals and e-books by title. (Author or subject search is unavailable)
    • Please enter one word in the journal or book title.

Using a database

The University of Tokyo subscribes to numerous newspapers, language dictionaries, and databases. Search for GACoS.

  • GACoS
    • Narrow down function for the databases that can be used off-campus.
    • Databases has off-campus connections is indicated an icon of "via Off-Campus access service" or "Free".
    • There are links to SSL-VPN / Authentication Gateway Service. Useful free search tools and electronic resources for the remote study period.

  • Elsevier: ScienceDirect [Free to access through August, 2020]
    • 256 textbooks are free to access for ScienceDirect subscribers. Browse "book title lists" here.
      Available titles can also be found in E-journal & E-book Portal.
  •  Maruzen ebook Library [Expanded access to additional 50 users through July 31, 2020]
    • Number of simultaneous users for some ebooks has been increased from single or three to 50 users, through July 31, 2020.
      Please follow this link "News on Maruzen Yushodo website" for available ebook title lists.
  • ProQuest Ebook Central [Unlimited access through June 19, 2020]
    • Some single or three-user licenses have been upgraded to unlimited number of users access without extra cost, through June 19, 2020.
  • JSTOR
    • About 32,000 ebooks until August 31 and more than 2,000 ejournals until December 31, 2020 are provided for free.
      Available titles can be found in E-journal & E-book Portal.

  • DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals)
    • A site for open access journals. Only reliable journals examined as properly peer-reviewed with reliable sources are listed.
  • J-STAGE
    • E-journal publication platform for Japanese academic journals. Those with "FREE ACCESS" and "OPEN ACCESS" icons are released for free.
  • PMC
    • An open access dissertation archive run by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a department within the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
  • BMC
    • Biological / Medical: A search platform for publishers that publish peer-reviewed open access journals.
