Reference Service Policy of the General Library

The General Library will respond the following types of questions and inquiries.

  • For members of the University of Tokyo
    • About searching, obtaining, or viewing materials
    • About searching holdings (OPAC), or searching with the card catalog
    • About searching for documents on a certain theme
    • About providing guidance with bibliographies, reference books, and related departments
    • About search methods for various databases and electronic journals
    • About searching for information on a subject (things, events, people, etc.)
    • About the University of Tokyo
  • For non-members
    • About the University of Tokyo
    • About materials held at the University of Tokyo
  • We cannot respond the following types of questions and inquiries.
    • About investigation or research agents
    • About the creation of comprehensive databases
    • About answers to school homework
    • About matters that infringe on personal privacy

How to ask

  • ASK Service
    ASK Service allows you to forward your questions to the library through the Internet. Answers will be provided by the most suitable library from among the libraries of the University of Tokyo, usually via e-mail.

  • Please note that questions are generally not accepted by phone. We would particularly prefer to receive more complicated inquiries through ASK Service.
